Why "Walking It Off" is the Worst Advice for a Sports Injury

Playing through the pain doesn't build toughness — it's often the fastest way to turn a minor issue into major surgery.

Pain is a signal, not weakness. DVM Hospital · Sports Injury Care

Whether you're a weekend warrior playing cricket or a dedicated marathon runner, injuries happen. In sports culture, there's often a mindset of "playing through the pain" or simply "walking it off." From an orthopaedic perspective, this is the fastest way to turn a minor issue into a major surgery.

Pain is not weakness; it is your body's alarm system signaling tissue stress.

When you ignore a sharp pain in your knee or a sudden pull in your shoulder, you are asking surrounding muscles and ligaments to compensate.

Micro-tears become ruptures

A minor Grade 1 ligament sprain can heal with a few weeks of rest and rehab. Continuing to play on it can easily cause a Grade 3 complete rupture.

Altered biomechanics

Limping or changing your throwing motion to avoid pain places unnatural stress on healthy joints, often causing secondary injuries.

Sprain

Ligament injury

Overstretching or tearing of ligaments — the tissue connecting bone to bone, like an ankle sprain.

Strain

Muscle or tendon injury

Overstretching or tearing of muscles or tendons, like a hamstring pull.

Tear

Severe fibre disruption

A severe disruption of the tissue fibres. A complete tear often requires surgical repair, especially in active individuals — for example, an ACL tear.

If you get hurt on the field, immediately stop playing and apply the R.I.C.E protocol.

R

Rest

Stop the activity immediately.

I

Ice

Apply cold packs for 15–20 minutes to reduce swelling.

C

Compression

Use an elastic bandage to control swelling.

E

Elevation

Keep the injured area elevated above heart level if possible.

Never apply heat to a fresh injury.

Our Philosophy

Listen to the alarm, don't silence it.

A day off the field is almost always shorter than the recovery from an injury you played through.
